The past month has brought a number of key appointments in the field of healthcare risk management.
Industry veteran on board at Alliant
Veteran underwriter Barbara Sinclair has joined Alliant Healthcare Solutions as Senior Vice President. The 30-year industry specialist will employ her deep technical expertise to provide customized insurance programs that address the evolving exposures of modern healthcare organizations.
Sinclair brings extensive experience in underwriting and brokerage, specializing in medical professional and excess coverages and alternative risk financing agreements.
“The insurance needs of today’s healthcare organizations are changing as a result of ongoing industry consolidation and the continued roll-out of the Affordable Care Act,” said Todd Hagemeier, managing director of Alliant Healthcare Solutions.
“Barbara’s breadth of industry expertise will enable us to deliver innovative products and services that address the shifting landscape of risk and safeguard our clients’ future.”
Prior to joining Alliant, Sinclair served as senior vice president and product manager with a national insurance underwriter, where she was responsible for the design and delivery of products and coverage solutions for the firm’s medical and professional liability team. An expert in healthcare reform, Sinclair led a strategic initiative evaluating changing liability and coverage needs resulting from the Affordable Care Act.
Sinclair studied medical technology and business administration at Central Connecticut State College and holds an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) certification. The noted industry expert has delivered speeches on healthcare at numerous high-profile industry conferences, including the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS) and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) New England.
She will be based in the Houston office of Alliant.
Desjardins joins Coverys
Meanwhile, Coverys has welcomed Dr Paul Desjardins to the board of directors of Medical Professional Mutual Insurance Company (ProMutual), a Coverys company and a leading provider of medical professional liability insurance.
“Dr Desjardins brings strong knowledge of strategic planning and experience in the healthcare industry which will be instrumental to the board of directors as Coverys continues to respond to the needs of the evolving industry,” said Brenda E. Richardson, chair of the board of directors for ProMutual.

Desjardins has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare, currently serving as the president of Desjardins Associates, LLC.
He was previously the senior vice president of global clinical research and medical affairs for Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, senior vice president of global clinical and medical affairs at Wyeth Consumer Healthcare and executive vice president of clinical research operations at SCIREX Corporation.
He also served as professor and as the associate dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Dental School.
Other moves
Molina Healthcare has appointed Dr Keith Wilson as chief medical officer.
In this role, Wilson will be responsible for establishing clinical policy and oversight of medical management functions of all the company’s health plan subsidiaries, including utilization management, quality improvement, pharmacy and risk management activities.
He was previously the vice president of clinical services for the Molina Medical Group clinics and American Family Care.
“I’m very pleased that Dr Wilson has accepted the chief medical officer position,” said Terry Bayer, chief operating officer of Molina Healthcare. “As our membership grows and we serve more patients with complex medical needs, it is important that we further integrate our efforts with providers. Dr Wilson’s track record in leading physician practices and caring for sicker patients, in addition to his managed care experience, will be invaluable.”
Wilson has nearly 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Molina Healthcare in March 2013, he served as a regional medical director with HealthCare Partners. Prior to that, he was president and chief executive officer of Talbert Medical Group until he arranged the group’s merger with HealthCare Partners.
Wilson is an active board member and past chairman of the Financial Solvency Standards Board for the State of California’s Department of Managed Care, past chairman of the California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG), and past board member of the Spencer Hospice Foundation.
He currently sits on the CAPG Public Policy committee and is a member of the American Medical Association, National Medical Association, and the Orange County Medical Association. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Back in the world of insurance, HM Insurance Group (HM) has named David Daley vice president, underwriting and pricing, for the managed care reinsurance program marketed as RBS Re.
Daley will be responsible for all aspects of underwriting, pricing and actuarial product development for this segment of the business.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to the managed care reinsurance space, this newly added role will continue to position us for growth and provide creative solutions to emerging healthcare risks,” said Elizabeth Midtlien, president of RBS Re. “We are excited to have someone with David’s experience and industry knowledge.”

Daley comes to HM from Reinsurance Group of America, where he served as vice president and chief underwriter for healthcare reinsurance. Prior to that, he held numerous insurance and reinsurance underwriting leadership positions both global and domestic.
