ACE Group has appointed Jim Smith as medical malpractice product manager and chief underwriting officer for ACE Overseas General (AOG). The move is part of its continued focus on underwriting and its drive to expand its global footprint in the field of medical professional liability.

In his new role, Smith will oversee underwriting execution of ACE’s medical liability insurance business in all retail markets globally outside North America. As well as overseeing existing portfolios, he will also drive targeted expansion of ACE’s global footprint into new markets – with a focus on emerging economies.

He will be responsible for all technical product, pricing, operations, reinsurance, and head referral functions for medical malpractice internationally. He will also be responsible for developing and promulgating technical underwriting tools needed for this line of business and for driving new product development.

“I am pleased to welcome Jim into our growing financial lines division,” said Timothy O’Donnell, executive vice president, financial lines at ACE Overseas General. “The breadth of medical liability expertise, underwriting success, and leadership capabilities he has exhibited make him well-suited for this key role as we further expand our medical liability footprint around the world. He will be instrumental in ensuring that we deliver a consistent and best-in-class medical malpractice proposition in our top focus regions.”

Caroline Clouser, chair of ACE’s global medical professional liability board, added: “Jim’s appointment reflects our continued commitment to the medical malpractice market internationally. His deep industry experience and proven ability to work collaboratively around the globe will prove to be great assets in our plans to build upon ACE’s success in the global medical professional liability marketplace.”
