Ian Thomson, former head of risk management at pharmaceuticals manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), has joined RKH Insurance Brokers’ healthcare team.
Thomson will focus on developing RKH’s life sciences platform, while his experience as an insurance buyer and risk manager will strengthen RKH’s entire healthcare client service offering.
Thomson was most recently vice president of corporate insurance risk management at GSK, where he advised the main board on managing the company’s insurable loss exposure. He has worked in-house as an insurance buyer and risk manager for over 30 years, and was at GSK since 1986. Throughout his career he has won industry awards for the quality of his risk management work, the most recent in 2013.
Thomson said: “Large organisations increasingly rely on their broker to operate as an extension of their in-house risk management teams. I have first-hand experience of many of the issues faced by corporate buyers and I believe this perspective, especially when combined with a top broking team, creates a rare skill mix that will bring significant value to clients across the life sciences and broader healthcare sector.”
Alistair Carter, executive director of RKH’s healthcare division, added: “From its initial focus on excess casualty, RKH Healthcare has responded to client demand with the addition of a wide range of specialist products that cover areas such as medical billings errors and omissions and cyber.
“Developing capabilities that can address the evolving regulatory challenges and worldwide liability exposures of life sciences companies is a natural extension to this, and by combining Ian’s expertise with RKH’s global broking capabilities in the London, European and Bermuda markets we can provide insurance solutions that will meet the sector’s challenges.”
