Cigna has appointed new market presidents for its Georgia and Alabama health plans, and commercial business in Connecticut.

As market president, Bryan Holgerson will be responsible for serving the Georgia and Alabama communities. He will also partner with local health care professionals and health systems to drive market growth, while improving the health of its customers.

Holgerson is based in Atlanta, and moves to this new role after serving as a senior leader for Cigna's national accounts segment.

In her newly-created position, Wendy Sherry will be responsible for Cigna's commercial health care and related benefits plans in Connecticut. Earlier this year, Cigna established Connecticut as a stand-alone market separate from the rest of New England. Its New England market will continue to be led by Mark Butler, who is based in Newton, Massachusetts.

Sherry will also continue to lead Cigna's national payer solutions business unit, which sells Cigna networks, pharmacy and other health services on a wholesale basis to third party administrators (TPAs), hospitals and insurers. She will continue to be based at the company's headquarters in Bloomfield.

"Bryan is a highly-respected, proven leader who will continue to move Cigna forward as the partner of choice in the market," said Rich Novack, Cigna vice president, US markets. "His high-energy, thoughtful leadership and expertise in executing strategy will be an asset to his team, our customers and clients in Georgia and Alabama."

Commenting on Sherry's appointment, Mike Triplett, Cigna president, US markets, said: "Wendy Sherry is a seasoned Cigna executive who has seen first-hand how health care operates from many angles. She is passionate about Cigna's health improvement mission, and has broad experience forging strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. I can think of no one better suited to lead our business in Connecticut and advance our efforts to become the partner of choice for employers, health care providers, community organizations and customers."
