America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) has elected David Cordani, president and CEO of Cigna Corporation, to serve as chairman of its board beginning January 2019.

Ken Burdick, CEO of WellCare Health Plans, will serve as AHIP board chair-elect for 2019 and board chair for 2020, it added.

Cordani and Burdick will succeed Bernard Tyson, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, who is serving as chair for 2018.

Cordani has led Cigna since 2009, spearheading the company’s evolution into a global health service company. Burdick brings 38 years of health care experience. He has led WellCare as CEO since 2015.

“David and Ken share Bernard’s strong commitment to finding new solutions that improve affordability, value, and access for coverage and care, as well as to enhance the well-being of patients and consumers,” said Matt Eyles, president and CEO of AHIP. “We are grateful for Bernard’s continuing and exceptional leadership, and we look forward to David and Ken leading our industry and helping navigate the rapidly changing U.S. health care system to ensure we deliver for all Americans.”

Cordani said: “Together, AHIP members are committed to a more proactive approach to consumer health and physician engagement, with an emphasis on more personalized products and services that help improve affordability and value. I am honored to work with Ken, Matt and the AHIP team as we engage with consumers and take action to advance solutions and private sector innovations that improve the health and financial security of America’s families, businesses and communities.”

Burdick added: “Our industry has a vision for a more patient and consumer-centered system that delivers more choices, simpler health care experiences, and better results. We will continue to work in partnership across the public and private sectors to achieve these goals and improve the health and financial security of individuals and families across our nation.”
