Richard Anderson, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of The Doctors Company, has been selected by the PIAA’s Board of Directors to serve as its chair.

PIAA is an international association representing the medical and healthcare professional liability (MPL/HPL) insurance community.

The appointment occurred during the 2016 PIAA Medical Liability Conference in Washington, DC.

Anderson will replace current chair Gloria Everett, president and CEO, The Mutual RRG. He has led The Doctors Company, the nation’s largest physician-owned MPL insurer, for more than 20 years. He was a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and is past chairman of the Department of Medicine at Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he served as senior oncologist for 18 years.

During the 2016 Medical Liability Conference, PIAA also elected three new directors, appointed its slate of officers, and re-elected two directors.

The PIAA Board of Directors appointed Mary-Lou Misrahy, president and CEO, Physicians Insurance a Mutual Company, to serve as vice chair and James Swift, DDS, chair, OMS National Insurance Company, RRG, to serve as secretary.

The PIAA membership elected three new directors: Francis Lavoie, managing director (MD), president/CEO, Medical Mutual Insurance Company of Maine; Christine Tomkins, MD, CEO, The Medical Defence Union; and Thomas Wander, president and CEO, BETA Healthcare Group.

Paul McNabb, II, MD, chairman, State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company, completed a nine-year term on the Board of Directors.

Misrahy and Joseph Wilson, Jr, MD, chairman of the Board and CEOm MAG Mutual Insurance Company, were re-elected to serve three-year terms on the Board of Directors.

“I’m happy to be passing the reins over to Richard,” said Everett. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position, and the association will be in good hands under his watch. I look forward to PIAA’s sustained progress, under Richard’s leadership, in promoting, protecting, educating, and connecting all of the organizations and people in the medical and healthcare professional liability community that support the quality delivery of healthcare.”

Anderson added: “The shifting healthcare environment has created significant challenges for both the individuals and institutions that deliver patient care. As the new PIAA chair, I look forward to guiding the association as it works in support of those entities that insure physicians, advanced healthcare professionals, and hospitals and medical facilities around the world.

“PIAA has a wealth of exceptional tools and programs in place to advance patient safety, including its ability to analyze thousands of closed MPL/HPL claims through the PIAA Data Sharing Project.”

Brian Atchinson, PIAA president and CEO, commented: Dr Anderson’s contributions to the establishment of a stable medical liability market and the advancement of quality patient care are substantial. His in-depth knowledge of both insurance and clinical medicine, on a national and as well as an international basis, will be instrumental in helping PIAA continue to build on its strong foundation of success.”

“In addition, I would like to recognize outgoing chair Gloria Everett for her outstanding leadership and dedication. Gloria’s work as Chair during the past two years has been exemplary, and we are confident that the Association will benefit from her continued efforts as a member of the Board.”
